Many a times these are the people we never look at, we choose to ignore because they dress and smell filthy. I interviewed my locality sweepers "Jhadoo walas" or "kachra walas" as you would call them, in order to know their work scenario, their working conditions as well as their lifestyles and how they spend their time when they're free or how do manage to earn for their families.
When I talked to them, I was shocked to learn their monthly pay and the way they managed to provide bread and butter to their families who lived miles away from them.
Here's a small little chat with Mr. Rajesh:
Are you from Mumbai ?
No, I am from Bareli.
How long have you been in Mumbai?
It's been six years now.
Would you mind if I ask how much is your monthly salary?
No, it's okay. I get 3000 per month.
What areas do you clean?
I clean 8 floors on an everyday basis.
How many members are there in your family ?
I have 6 younger sisters and a widowed mother.
How do you make your home run smoothly ?
It's very difficult. Apart from cleaning the locality, I wash cars and gardens too. In this way I manage to earn 6000 per month and that isn't enough to provide for them all.
Are you satisfied with whatever you do for your living?
I can't do anything about it. I haven't studied a word throughout my life. I wish I could live a decent life. Sometimes I wish I was dead, but then a person who is very close to me gives me the courage to face everything.
And who is this person ?
She is my girlfriend. She is the one who rescues me out of the lonliness of life.
What is it you hold most dear? Apart from your family.
'I am greatly attached to my god. He gives me the immense strength to get up early in the morning with a lets-do-it attitude.'
If you get a chance to become a big personality one day, who would it be?
(He chuckles)
Shahrukh Khan is my inspiration. I want to follow in his footsteps.
Rajesh never thought he'd get this far from his roots but he's here, struggling each day to earn a livelihood only for his family. We must respect them for the mere thought of carrying buckets full of water for cleaning, up and down the stairs is exhausting. Think about them who actually do it all alone.
